Development of data and evidence needed to advance a Culture of Health.  Research could:
(1) Provide evidence for factors in the Action Framework that are believed - but not yet proven to impact health; (2) Reframe or challenge existing ideas; (3) Integrate existing data and methods across disciplines and sectors; and/or (4) Identify actions that can improve health for marginalized populations.

Thrasher Research Fund
E.W. "Al" Thrasher Awards

Ideal applications address significant health problems that affect children in large numbers and offer the potential for practical solutions to these problems.  Such solutions sh/be innovative and have potential for broad applicability w/low financial and/or technical barriers to implementation.  Hypothesis-driven research is preferred over exploratory, hypothesis-generating research. Projects with a shorter distance to clinical applicability are given priority.
Due Dates: Concept papers accepted on a rolling basis, and time from submission to decision is 1-6 weeks.  Submission of full proposal is allowed up to 1 year after approval of concept.  Review and response on proposal can take about 4 months.  Proposals and reviews are submitted to Committees at the beginning of February and August and final decisions are made in late March and late September.  For a September decision, concept papers should be submitted in April to allow sufficient time for the process.

The goal is to accelerate the clinical introduction of medical products and technologies that target ovarian cancer biology. Near-term clinical impact is expected. Proof-of-concept demonstrating the potential utility of the proposed product or a prototype/preliminary version of the proposed product should already be established; thus, preclinical studies in animals are not allowed. Small-scale clinical trials (Phase 0, Phase 1, Pilot), studies enriching a clinical trial, and projects related to or associated with ongoing or completed clinical trials are allowed.

 Research proposals in the following topic areas are preferred:
1.    New systemic treatments for metastatic, lethal prostate cancer incl. those targeting the 
       currently 'undruggable'.
2.    First-in-field research on new targets for systemic treatment of metastatic, lethal prostate
        cancer.
3.    Mechanisms of resistance to current and investigational drugs targeting the androgen
        receptor and androgen axis, immune system and chemotherapy.
4.    Correlative research around either clinical trials of novel agents or strategies or standard
        of care.
5.    Developing/validating biomarkers guiding therapy in patients or further understanding of
       mechanisms by which therapies work.
6.    Tumor microenvironment signaling related to cancer progression including the immune
       component.
7.    New bioinformatics technologies for analysis of genomic data.

Ann Schreiber Mentored Investigator Award

This award provides funding for trainees who are working under the supervision of a mentor who is a recognized leader in the field of ovarian cancer research, or relevant area.

Eligibility: Must be either clinical fellows (Gynecologic Oncology, Medical Oncology) or postdoctoral fellows;

Collaborative Research Development Grant

The purpose is to provide funds for ovarian cancer research projects that may involve several investigators within one institution or collaborations between groups in multiple institutions. Interdisciplinary collaborations are encouraged.  The selection committee will consider most favorably applications that are creative, original, and hold the most promise in the areas of screening and early detection, etiology and prevention, molecular therapeutics, cancer biology and genetics.

The Liz Tilberis Early Career Award

This Award is for junior faculty with a strong commitment to an investigative career in the field of ovarian cancer research. The intent is to support a substantial time commitment to research and academic endeavors in ovarian cancer.  Applications that are creative, original, and hold the most promise in the areas of early detection, prevention, treatment, and translational ovarian cancer research will receive  favorable consideration.

The goal is to fund high-risk/high-reward research that lacks sufficient preliminary data to secure traditional funding.

Eligibility: Applicants must belong to 1 of the following:
Tenure-track Assistant Professors w/in first 4 years of initial Asst. Professor appt. (Cut-off date: July 1, 2012.)
Clinical Instructors and Senior Clinical Fellows (in final year of sub-specialty training) holding an MD who are pursuing a period of independent research before taking a tenure-track faculty position.  Such individuals must have an exceptional record of research accomplishment, dedicated laboratory space and support of their institution.
Note: Research Assistant Professors, Research Associate Professors, Research Scientists and Postdoctoral Fellows are not eligible. 
Applicants are expected to commit a minimum of 80% effort to research

Additional funding to support the next stage of development for projects that were previously funded under SBIR or STTR Phase II awards from any Federal agency.  Projects proposed in response to this FOA must be applicable to one of the following areas: (1) cancer therapeutics; (2) cancer imaging technologies, interventional devices, and/or in vivo diagnostics; or (3) in vitro and ex vivo cancer diagnostics and prognostics. The purpose is to facilitate transition of SBIR or STTR Phase II projects to the commercialization stage.
