Changes to Grant Support Enters Transition Phase

The first phase of transformation has been implemented. Position descriptions have been changed in the Office of Sponsored Research and in each of the three divisions, both at the Department/Program level and at the Program Support Level.

This change means an investigator who is going to apply for funding now has a team of 3 to assist them.

Grant Administrators (GA) who in most cases are already providing some type of support as Research or Administrative or Program Associates, will assist in preparing the proposal, performing such tasks as creating/obtaining biosketches, creating/updating other support information, routing completed Internal Forms, and anything else the Principal Investigator might request.

Research Financial Analysts (RFA) (formerly Grant & Contract Specialists) will develop a budget and budget narrative with the PI and Grant Administrator.

Sponsored Research Administrators (SRA) in the Office of Sponsored Research will accept completed applications with a minimum of 48 hours (2 days) provided to review the proposal in its entirety before submission.   Applications with errors or omissions will be returned for correction/s. During this period of transition, OSR staff will provide training and assistance to the GAs and RFAs, and faculty can always call their Sponsored Research Administrator with questions about submissions.

If you have any questions about these transformations, please contact your Division Administrator (Kara O'Neil  Mercedes Robaina or Wanda Williamson) and for the Office of Sponsored Research, please contact Jane O'Connor.

NIH Announces Changes to Submission Policy for Some Awards

The NIH has announced that, effective immediately, it will accept a new (A0) application following an unsuccessful resubmission (A1) application. The subsequent new application need not demonstrate substantial changes in scientific direction compared to previously reviewed submissions, and must not contain an introduction to respond to the critiques from the previous review.

This alters a policy in effect since 2009 that permitted only one "resubmission" after an application was rejected and "stipulated that any subsequent submission for that project must demonstrate significant changes in scientific direction compared to the previous submissions."

The new policy, which applies to certain funding from NIH and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, is described as a change to the resubmission policy below, but it actually addresses what may be considered a new submission. Resubmissions are still limited to one.
