Significant Changes to SPORE Guidelines

There have been significant changes to Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPOREs), for Years 2013 and 2014 (P50s).

The Program Organization and Capabilities (POC) section now requires information on the scientific and administrative leadership of the SPORE; cancer patient population; integration of the shared resource cores with the projects; and planning and evaluation activities, and bioinformatics infrastructure - development and usage.

A new Scientific Collaboration (SC) Section has been added and includes descriptions of collaborative efforts of SPORE projects within the SPORE community, access clinical trial and translational science mechanisms, and also with other government and non-government programs. An Administrative Core and External Advisory Board is now is a requirement.

A project in early detection, prevention, or cancer population science will now be required or SPOREs only in four malignancies: breast, prostate, lung, and gastrointestinal cancers.

A new scoring paradigm means the overall Impact/Priority Score will now reflect the likelihood that the proposed SPORE will have a sustained powerful impact on translational cancer research in the organ site or group of related cancers chosen for the study.  The previous 70%/30% weighting (projects plus Cores/developmental programs plus POC) has been eliminated.

There are also greater restrictions on submitting materials after submission.

Detailed information is presented in the appropriate sections of the  Guidelines and in PAR-12-296, SROREs in Human Cancer.
